El Panecillo Hill

Long valued as a natural lookout, this hill in central Quito was named "Panecillo," or "little bread loaf" due to its shape. At 3,000 meters (almost 10,000 feet) above sea level, it offers a stunning view of Quito and the natural Andean beauty which surrounds the city.

On the summit of Panecillo Hill is the monument to the Virgin Mary created in 1976 by the Spanish artist Agustín de la Herrán Matorras. It is composed of seven thousand pieces and is considered the greatest aluminum sculpture in the world.

The statue of the virgin is a large-scale copy of the 30-centimeter (12 inch) one created in the 18th century by Bernardo de Legarda. The original is in the convent of the San Francisco Church.
